Policy Options

The type of life insurance you choose should be based on what you want from your insurance policy.

Term life insurance provides coverage for a limited period of time. It comes with a smaller initial premium and is typically purchased in large amounts to help with your short-term goals.

  • Provides coverage for a limited time period (term), as long as premiums are paid
  • Provides a death benefit, but typically no cash value
  • Initially, less expensive form of life insurance
  • May be renewable or convertible

Permanent life insurance (often called "Whole Life") provides lifetime coverage and consistent premiums. This type of coverage also offers a guaranteed return on your policy's cash value.

  • Provides lifetime coverage, as long as premiums are paid
  • Cash value accumulates over time and can be accessed during your lifetime
  • Level premiums for the length of the policy
  • May offer flexible premium payments

Universal Life is a form of permanent life insurance with the additional benefit of a savings and investment element. Some options are flexible premium, while others use single or fixed premiums.

  • Types include UL, Indexed UL (IUL) & Variable UL
  • Borrow against cash value with no tax implications
  • Offers both death benefit and cash value elements
  • Savings can accumulate throughout the life of the policy

Final expense insurance is a whole life policy that pays medical bills and funeral expenses when you die. It's a limited, inexpensive policy compared with others.

  • Death benefit is guaranteed as long as you pay your premiums
  • Often purchased at age 50 or older
  • Average funeral costs are $8,000–$10,000+
  • Policies can have waiting periods from 1 to 3 years

Long-Term Care Insurance helps protect your retirement assets and reduces the financial and emotional burden on your family if you ever need extended care. It covers the costs of in-home care, assisted living, or nursing home services that are not covered by health insurance or Medicare.

  • Pays for care in your home, assisted living, or nursing facility
  • Benefits activate after a waiting (elimination) period, typically 30–90 days
  • Can be purchased as a standalone policy or added to a life insurance plan with an LTC rider
  • Coverage is usually purchased between ages 45–65
  • Average long-term care costs range from $50,000–$100,000+ per year depending on location and care type

Disability Insurance protects your income if an illness or injury prevents you from working. For professionals—especially doctors, dentists, attorneys, and other high-earning specialists—your ability to work is your most valuable asset. This coverage ensures you can continue paying your bills, supporting your family, and maintaining your lifestyle even if your paycheck stops unexpectedly.

  • Replaces a portion of your income if you can't work due to illness or injury
  • Offers "own-occupation" protection for professionals whose specific skills and training are essential (critical for physicians and specialists)
  • Benefits typically begin after an elimination period of 30–180 days
  • Available as individual policies or through employer-sponsored plans, with optional riders for stronger coverage
  • Ideal for doctors, nurses, attorneys, business owners, and self-employed professionals
  • Protects future earnings, bonuses, and career-trajectory income
  • Policies generally replace 50–70% of income, tax-free when premiums are paid with after-tax dollars

Finding the Right Policy

Life insurance offers a range of benefits for you and your family. These include financial security, retirement planning, mortgage protection, final expense, business protection, tax deductions and insurance loans. The benefits you want for your family will determine what type of policy you need. Asking the right questions is therefore critical when selecting a life insurance policy:

  • How much coverage do I need?
  • How long do I want to pay premiums?
  • What type of life insurance should I buy?
  • Will I need flexibility for my premiums?
  • How long will I need the policy?
  • Will I need cash value?
